Former Vice President Al Gore has sold Current TV, the news network he co-founded, to Al-Jazeera, the Pan-Arab news channel that's struggled to find an audience in America.
Gore confirmed the sale on Wednesday in a statement that said Al-Jazeera shares Current TV's mission "to give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling."
The Qatar government-owned Al-Jazeera plans to evolve Current into Al-Jazeera America and add five-to-10 new U.S. offices. Al-Jazeera currently has an audience of about 4.7 million homes, primarily in major markets. With the acquisition of Current, it will reach about 40 million homes.
