Two parent-of-the-year candidates in Utah reacted to the Connecticut school shooting by sending their sixth grader to school with a gun on Monday.
The 11-year-old, whose name was not released, pulled the unloaded weapon from his backpack during recess at his school in a Salt Lake City suburb. Though his classmates did not immediately tell teachers about it, a fellow sixth grader says he pointed the gun at her head and said he was going to kill her.
Even after finding out about the incident, administrators did not put the school on lockdown or send students home, insisting they didn't want to cause panic. That angered parent John Klaus, who says, "No one was called. Nothing was done. And then we had to hear it from our kids."
The boy faces expulsion and possible criminal charges.
