Time for Bulb & Plant Mart

    here's the buzz...

I'm feeling a bit lazy this week, and decided that I didn't need to write much of anything about the upcoming Bulb & Plant Mart, an annual event that die-hard Houston gardeners look forward to each year. The real reason I didn't need to write anything myself, is because the Bulb and Plant Mart folks did it all for me (us).

    What?
One of the largest horticultural events in Texas, the 60th Annual Bulb and Plant Mart will feature the widest selection of top-quality bulbs from domestic and international suppliers and an expanded collection of hard-to-find and unusual plants, perennials, trees, shrubs and vines. Many of the plants and bulbs will be unique offerings from the gardens of Club members, grown specifically for the Mart.
  • For details on what is sold click here

    When?
    Oct. 3-5, 2002 Thurs., and Fri.: 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sat.,: 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

    Where?
Westminster United Methodist Church, 5801 San Felipe at Bering, just west of the Galleria. (For map, click here)

As experienced and beginning gardeners alike have come to expect, the Bulb and Plant Mart features the widest selection of top-quality bulbs from domestic and international suppliers and, in an outdoor area, an expanded collection of hard-to-find unusual plants, perennials, trees, shrubs, and vines. Many of the plants and bulbs for sale are unique offerings from the gardens of Club members, grown specifically for the Mart.

From amaryllis to zephyranthes, more than 500,000 bulbs are available at the Bulb and Plant Mart, including large bulbs such as daffodils (Narcissi), hyacinths, more than 55 varieties of tulips, iris, amaryllis and crinum lilies; and among small bulbs, the most popular anemones, ranunculus, crocus, freesia, ixia, watsonia and zephyranthes (rain lilies).

In outdoor areas, shoppers find a wide selection of plant materials, including unusual varieties difficult to find in most retail outlets. Also featured will be favorite plants of Garden Club members, such as gingers, Louisiana irises, gloriosa lilies, and many interesting vines and ornamental trees.

Back this year will be the Unique Boutique. Horticultural experts staff this booth offering information, advice, and selling gardening and handcrafted items. Visitors to the Mart receive at no charge a horticultural guide for Houston, prepared by the club. The booklet includes descriptions of the items for sale, along with proper planting and horticulture information.

The Bulb Mart offers free admission and convenient parking. While a limited number of wagons are available for shoppers, you are encouraged to bring your own carts or wagons for ease in transporting your purchases around the Mart. Popular bulb species sometimes sell-out quickly during the Mart. To ensure you get the bulbs you want, we offer an opportunity to order your bulbs in advance and pick them up at the Mart. If you would like to be added to our mailings, e-mail us at tulip@gchouston.org. Include your name and address and we will send you all mailings including the preorder form for the 2002 Bulb & Plant Mart.

All funds raised from the Bulb and Plant Mart benefit civic beautification and environmental projects of The Garden Club of Houston, including landscaping of grounds and the gardens of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, restoration of grounds and gardens of Rienzi, the gardens of The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, and the Eco-Lecture Series, Museum of Natural Science. The Club also donates thousands of bulbs annually to Houston parks, churches, schools and public spaces.

The Bulb & Plant Mart will be 60 years old this year and we plan to celebrate! Every day of the Mart will be a party with balloons, banners, prizes and an all-round festive atmosphere. All sorts of surprises are planned to make the whole three days one big birthday bash.

    New Bulbs this Year, 2002
Bulbs this year have been carefully selected for size, quality, and performance. Select a variety of different bulbs for continuous garden delight.
  • 1. All of the amaryllis this year will be JUMBO size bulbs. If you did not try one last year, it is a must. They make wonderful gifts too. The two new amaryllis are "Trendsetter" and "Pink Blossom."
  • 2. Crinums and lilies have an unusual stock this year for easy garden success. An easy winner for April is the Calla Aethiopica or the Agapanthus.
  • 3."Carlton" will again be the special daffodil because it continues to be a great success here in Houston, even when planted in the lawn. The new daffodils are "Golden Dawn" (a yellow and orange tazetta), "Orangery" ( a split corona white and tangerine), and "Johann Strauss" ( a frilled trumpet cup cream and orange). "Rynveld's Early Sensation" was the winner in the test garden. It is an early bloomer and is long lasting!
  • 4.Hyacinths in Booth #3 will feature the new blue "Double Hollyhock" These delightfully fragrant bulbs are wonderful in the garden or in the home.
  • 5. Massing the jumbo ranunculus with anemones will produce an incredible long lasting flower bed. These will be another possible entry for Florescence. Try edging your beds with the Zephyranthes. They continue to bloom all year.
  • 6. A first for our Mart is the size 14 + tulip. These oversized bulbs will be in yellow, pink, white, or red. New tulips are a pink "Garden Club of America," "Red Lips" which is red and white, and "Hero" which is a fully double sport of "Queen of the Night" and looks like a small black peony. The specials are "Monte Carlo" and "Pink and Red Impression." Remember that these bulbs must be held at 40 - 42 degrees for at least 8 weeks (a wine cellar is not cold enough).
  • 7. Caladiums are still blooming in our hot Houston gardens today. We will offer them again this year. They will be sold by the case only and will be available for you to plant in the early spring. Look for your order form in the mail in September.
