Mercer has Something for Everyone this Fall!
Howdy Gardening Enthusiasts!
Quite often, you'll hear me reference the Mercer Arboretum for great information, outside of my areas of expertise. And one of the things I also reference besides their wonderful March Mart and their knowledgeable director, Linda Gay, are some of the educational classes they have. Well, here's their entire Fall Schedule. From teaching kids about trees to proper pruning of trees, and everything in between, they can teach you something new or something more of what you're interested in. Children's Program: Be A Tree
Sat., Sept. 4 from 10 a.m.-noon, Nancy Leary, Jones Park's outreach director, presents a fun interactive program about trees for children ages 8 and older. Children will make a tree leaf identification T-shirt and go on a walk in the park to identify trees Registration is required; call Mercer for more details.
Lunch Bunch: A'Rose'a Therapy
Wed., Sept. 8 from noon - 1 p.m., join Renee Lawson of Chamblee's Nursery in Tyler for a discussion on fragrant roses. Renee will talk about her favorite scented roses and easy ways to propagate them. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the program. Please call ahead for reservations.
Volunteer Orientation and Training
Sat., Sept. 11 or Mon., Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. - noon, learn what it takes to be a volunteer at Mercer where many wonderful volunteer opportunities are offered. Orientation (9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.) provides information about Mercer and what volunteering is all about. Garden and greenhouse training (10:30 a.m. - noon) includes hands-on instruction on what volunteers do to help staff maintain the gardens. Please call ahead for reservations.
Pruning
Sat., Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. - noon, learn the best techniques and tools, and when to prune and when not to prune. Please call ahead for reservations.
October
30th Anniversary Celebration
Sat., Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., join the 30th anniversary celebration of Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens. Food, fun, and festivities include a singing cowboy, magician, and music. Speakers will present information on a variety of garden-related topics, garden tours; and a historic display of Mercer.

Wed., Oct. 13 from noon - 1 p.m., Suzzanne Chapman demonstrates the proper techniques for dividing and replanting these wonderful plants. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the program. Please call ahead for reservations.
Taxonomy Made Simple
Join Greg Harmison, Mercer's program manager, Sat., Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. - noon to learn basic information about plant taxonomy (scientific classification) and why common names may not always mean what they say. Please call ahead for reservations.

Wed., Nov. 10 from noon - 1 p.m., bring a sack lunch and join Suzzanne Chapman to learn which plants should be planted in the fall for a beautiful spring garden. Please call ahead for reservations.
Spring Bulbs for the Houston Area
Nothing says spring like beautiful blooming bulbs! Sat., Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. - noon, learn which bulbs grow best in our area, and when and how to plant them. With the right bulb choices, blooms will return year after year. Please call ahead for reservations.

The Piney Woods Wildlife Society meets the third Tuesday of each month from 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. Piney Woods Wildlife Society is a nonprofit organization for people interested in nature and the environment. Featured speakers give presentations on nature topics. New members and visitors are welcome.
The Cypress Creek Daylily Society meets the fourth Sunday of each month from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. The Cypress Creek Daylily Society is an organization of daylily enthusiasts that have monthly meetings with featured speakers. A sanctioned daylily show is sponsored at Mercer each year. New members and visitors are welcome.
